01 May 2025

This May, the Countryside Team is inviting everyone to get outside and reconnect with nature by joining a series of guided walks as part of Naturally Healthy May.

Organised by Active Devon, Naturally Healthy May is a campaign designed to encourage people to take time out to enjoy the incredible natural spaces around us. Whether it's a break from work, exams, or the general busyness of life, spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress, boost mood, and support overall wellbeing.

To help people explore the benefits of being outdoors, the Countryside Team is hosting a variety of walks at local nature reserves throughout the month. These include bat walks and nightjar walks, offering a chance to experience some of East Devon’s most fascinating nocturnal wildlife.

Bat Walks will be held at Seaton Wetlands on May 9 and May 23, led by Countryside Ranger and bat enthusiast Ben Morgan-Brown. Participants will have the opportunity to use bat detectors, listen for calls, and learn about the rare species that live in the area. Additional walks are also planned for the summer months.

From May 30, the team will begin hosting Nightjar Walks at Trinity Hill, continuing through the summer. These evening events provide a rare chance to hear the distinctive churring call of the elusive nightjar and, with a bit of luck, catch a glimpse of this ground-nesting bird in flight.
