A Week in the Life of Our Work Experience Student
Work experience is always a brilliant opportunity for us. Not only do we get to share what we do behind the scenes, but we also get to see our workplace through fresh eyes. This year was no exception.
From day one, Elena (16), a student from Colyton Grammer arrived curious, enthusiastic, and ready to get stuck in. Over the course of the week, she experienced everything from hands on practical work and public engagement to wildlife spotting and reflection on her experience!
But rather than just tell you about it, we thought we’d let her share her experience in her own words.
Why did you apply to do your work experience with Wild East Devon?
I knew that I wasn’t a fan of being inside an office all day and I come to Seaton Wetlands quite frequently. I wanted to experience what it was like working in a nature reserve as I knew there would be a variety of work involved.
Tell us about what you have been involved with over the last week?
Observing wildlife, dismantling a collapsed shelter, assisting with hedge trimming and laying, brush clearing in Knapp Copse local nature reserve and interacting with members of the public within the Discovery Hut.
Was there a particular part you enjoyed the most?
I loved the variety of tasks assigned to me throughout the week. There has been a perfect mix of practical tasks and quiet moments, which all provided a unique experience!
What would you like to do in the future and has this week helped inspire that?
I’d love to be a marine biologist and work with conservation, I’ve known this for a little while now but this whole experience has really helped to solidify that.
Please rate your week with us:
10/10, it’s been amazing; everyone has been really friendly and easy to get along with throughout the week and the variety of tasks has meant I haven’t been bored at all. Thank you to the Countryside team for having me!
