South West Coast Path

The East Devon District Council Countryside Team look after substantial parts of the South West Coast Path in East Devon.

What is the South West Coast Path?

The South West Coast Path was originally created by coastguards, patrolling the peninsula looking out for smugglers! The long-distance trail now receives 8.6 million visits per year and covers 630 miles from Somerset to Dorset, taking in North & South Devon, Cornwall and our patch in East Devon.

The East Devon section spans approximately 26 miles, running from Exmouth to Lyme Regis, forming part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Our team manage 19 miles of it.

This includes the very popular walk along the river Otter in Budleigh Salterton, and the stunning Underhook between Beer and Branscombe.

To help keep the path accessible for all the Countryside team:

  • Clear the path
  • Maintain viewpoints
  • Upgrade steps and gates
  • Maintain signage

More information on the whole path can be found on the South West Coast Path website.
