Discover the Hidden Beauty of Moths (with Muffins!)

This summer, the East Devon Countryside Team is excited to launch a brand-new event series in partnership with the Axe Vale & District Conservation Society: Moth and Muffin Mornings!
If you’re wondering what on earth a “Moth and Muffin Morning” might be - you’re not alone. But trust us, it’s the perfect way to start a summer morning, for nature lovers, families, photographers, and curious minds of all ages.
Let us tell you more...
Why Moths?
When we think of beautiful insects, butterflies tend to steal the spotlight. But we think moths are just a little bit more fascinating; while there are 52 species of butterfly native to the UK, there are over 3500 species of moth!
Moths play a vital role in the natural world. They're pollinators, decomposers, and a crucial food source for birds, bats, and other wildlife. They also have a fascinating lifecycle transforming from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to moth!
Many moths are just as beautiful as butterflies! From the eye-catching elephant hawk-moth to the distinctive peppered moth, their beauty often surprises people, especially when seen up close.
And the Muffins?
Every good event needs a tasty treat! As you enjoy drinks and muffins, our Countryside Rangers will guide you through the species that were humanely trapped the night before giving you a rare, chance to see the delicate wings and unique features of the moths up-close.
How It Works:
The evening before the event, the Countryside Rangers will set up a moth trap using an artificial light source. This attracts nocturnal moths into a container where they remain safely overnight.
In the morning, the trap will be carefully opened, and the discoveries shared and explained. There will be plenty of chances to take photos, and ask your questions.
And of course, all moths will be released safely after the session.
