Sand martins pairs looking for their summer home - credit Pete Turner

The Sand martins, Riparia riparia have arrived back for the 2nd year in a row! Good things come to those who wait. We were sure that it may never happen. We questioned if we had built it correctly. Lots of trials and errors. Then....

Our sand martin cliff which was built 12 years ago had been occupied last year 2023 for the first time. The excitement of it all when we had the first pair, followed by a huge influx a week later. With roughly 10-15 nests built and around 30 holes used, we were confident that this year would be bumper too as the chicks tend to come back to the same place they are hatched.

Fast forward to the first two weeks of March 2024 and we were delighted to see them starting to arrive back. Investigating the holes and surrounding area. Now a month on, you can come visit our sand martin cliff here at Seaton wetlands and see the many little summer migrant birds fluttering in and around the pond.
